Equiping your children for the world

This week was my daughter’s first trip to camp.  It has been bittersweet for both of us.

She spent the entire week prior to going being worried about about being away from home for so long, if she would enjoy it, and if she would have any friends there.  There comes a time when you need to gently urge your children into the world and let them experience it and make their own way.

As a parent you are of course filled with trepidation. Will they get hurt?   How will they handle things on their own?  It is natural to have these concerns for the little person who has been placed in your protection and care.  But it is a true gift to them by showing them that you have faith and trust in their abilities to use good judgement.

When you have given them valuable lessons on good decision making and being responsible for their actions, the best thing you can do is to let them act on it.

Even though I have missed her terribly this week, I am going to cherish her stories of how she handled gaining a little independence and growing up.  I am sure that she was pushed way beyond her comfort zone and all that she knew as safe.  It is in these instances where you learn how to rely on your own inner strength and power.  She was probably very nervous, unsure, and scared.  It is important to learn to work through those emotions in a safe way so they do not control their actions in the future.

Everyone experiences a little anxiety when facing something new.  Giving your child the support and permission to stand on their own and work through it is a great lesson on how to prepare for life.
