Why I won’t be doing the #icebucketchallenge

Screen shot 2014-08-19 at 4.38.11 PMIt’s gone viral all over social media.  It seems that everyone has gone crazy for doing #icebucketchallenge.  For those of you who may be living under a rock, the ice bucket challenge is a contest of sorts to raise money and awareness for ALS disease.  The challangee must dump a bucket of ice cold water over their head and then “call out” other people to do the same and in so doing make a donation to ALS research.  The miraculous thing is that this challenge has raised $5.5 million since it’s inception.

As a marketer I find it to be an intriguing and impressive feat for so many people to be promoting and participating in the challenge.  The viral nature of it is a marketers dream.

I may make myself unpopular by my going against the status quo, but I will not be taking part in the #icebucketchallenge!

One writer from patheos.com offers this viewpoint:

More than anything else, the ice bucket videos feel like an exercise in raising awareness of one’s own zaniness, altruism, and/or attractiveness in a wet T-shirt.

That’s why I’m proposing what is sure to be an unpopular alternative to the #icebucketchallenge. It’s called the no ice bucket challenge, and it works like this:

  1. Do not fetch a bucket, fill it with ice, or dump it on your head.
  2. Do not film yourself or post anything on social media.
  3. Just donate the damn money, whether to the ALS Association or to some other charity of your choice. And if it’s an organization you really believe in, feel free to politely encourage your friends and family to do the same.
I have to agree.  I fully am supportive of giving to and being a part of a cause, but I really do not see how a bunch of people dumping ice water over their heads in a publicity stunt will directly and positively affect people who are suffering with ALS.  It would be far better to donate one’s time or money to helping the individuals and their families in their daily struggles.
The Bible says in Matthew 6:1 Be careful not to display your righteousness merely to be seen by people. Otherwise you have no reward with your Father in heaven.
I won’t be guilted into participation for fear of public humiliation.  We are meant to do good works and be charitable, but not for the sake of boasting of your own egos.
